Below, our dental specialists at Sher Dental in Miami have described the most common side effects of dental implant surgery in Miami, FL. They will also provide advice on how to manage these side effects, and what to do in case they have a possible emergency on hand.

Common Dental Implant Surgery Side Effects

  • Pain and Discomfort

Small pain and discomfort should be expected after dental implant surgery. This should be most pronounced in the first 24 hours after the surgery, then diminishing as you start healing.

The patient should take the prescribed pain medications as recommended. Over-the-counter pain medications can also be used once the pain is no longer severe but still bothersome.

  • Minor Bleeding

A small amount of blood may come out from the incision area If such is minor, everything is okay. The bleeding should not be a problem anymore for a few days.

If you would like to decrease the bleeding both during and after oral surgery, stay away from heavy exercise and just rest as early as possible.

  • Tooth and Gum Sensitivity

The area around the gum line where the implants are placed will hurt. It applies to bone, gum tissue, and even to adjacent other teeth. These pains will subside after several days due to the healing of the tissues.

This requires you to stick to lukewarm foods and drinks to avoid sensitivity of the teeth and gums. Make sure you also do not consume any hot spicy foods nor can you take crunchy foods as this will irritate the sutures and incision site.

  • Color Around the Gums

Bruising and discoloration along the gum tissue are normal and should start fading within a few days. Two weeks since this should no longer be an issue. Provided the coloration is improving, then that is all right.

  • Swelling of the Gum Tissue

Swelling is also common after any type of surgical intervention. As the same as discoloration, swelling will be an issue for about two weeks. It should no longer be too noticeable along the gum line at that point.

  • Generalized Swelling of the Face

Postoperatively, swelling may affect the face areas surrounding the surgical region, so remember this while you are in the process of recovering. It may take a week, or so, to see day-to-day improvements.

To help reduce bruising and swelling, you can apply an ice compress over a towel directly to the area of your face that is impacted. The ice bag should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes and removed for 15 to 20 minutes. This can be repeated as often as needed to help control several of these post-op side effects.

  • Emergency Procedure

Do not hesitate to share your worsening side effects or any urgent concerns with your dentist or oral surgeon. This is a good reason to present all these issues right away as one way of avoiding serious complications.
